Land Registry

  • Property

HM Land Registry is the government body responsible for registering ownership of land and property in England and Wales. The register records the legal title, any charges, restrictions, notices, and other interests affecting the property. Registration provides a state-guaranteed record of ownership.

In practice

Creditors use Land Registry title searches to identify property owned by a judgement debtor. Once a charging order is obtained, it must be protected at the Land Registry by entering a restriction or notice on the relevant title. Official copies of the register can be obtained online for a small fee and are essential for enforcement planning.
